For years I’ve hated our front flower bed & just kept trying to add and replace flowers/shrubs to make it look better. But it just seemed to become more of a mess each year. As the tree in the front grew it blocked more & more sun causing our plants to suffer & die. It just looked like an overgrown jungle! I think James was a little skeptical at first when I told him I wanted to rip everything out & start over. But he was a fan of my “xeriscape” idea since we don’t have time to garden with 3 kids & it saves on water. So we pulled everything out & started with a fresh blank canvas. I’ve always wanted a front porch but our house only has a small covered area in front of the door. So I decided to turn the bed into a seating area that would be warm & inviting and give the feel of having a porch. I found an old crib for free online & asked my husband James to turn it into a bench for me. Then we went to a rock landscape yard & handpicked each of the stones for the walkway. Finally, I decided I wanted a window box to make it feel cozy & more cottage style. But since our front window goes almost to the ground, I asked James to build me a cedar box that would sit on the ground & mimic a window box by stopping just under the window seal. I plan to only keep seasonal flowers in the box so that they are constantly rotating & providing color all year long. Since it’s winter, I planted violas, pansies, snow crystals (which smell amazing), snapdragons, & ornamental kale. I absolutely love the transformation! It’s such a relaxing place to sit, feel the cool breeze, & listen to the soft melody of my windchime. It’s become my favorite space & even the kids love playing here now.
I’m so incredibly lucky that I have such a talented husband that can take my design visions & turn them into reality. I’m pretty sure he can build & fix anything!!! Love you babe- thanks for my new garden & trusting me when I said I had this crazy idea 🙂
