This morning my day started as just about every morning starts, with Joshua coming into my room at 5:55am to wake me up. Even though it’s only 5 minutes until 6am there is something about seeing the number 5 on my clock that just sets me off. I sent him back to bed as usual but I know that there is no pushing snooze with him & I better roll my tired butt out of bed because inevitably in a few minutes Joshua will have turned on lights in him room, start talking to himself, playing with toys, & wake the sleeping beast also know as Caden since they share a room. So just like everyone morning I take Joshua downstairs & grumpily exclaim that he needs to start sleeping later & that it’s way too early to wake up. I suddenly hear the baby on the monitor & realize that the clock is now ticking. I have to make breakfast & pack lunches before going to feed her so we don’t miss the bus. I pop some frozen pancakes & sausage into the microwave, grab the pb&j and with my heart racing scramble to try to get it all done before Bella loses it. I get the breakfast on the table & run upstairs to wake Caden up. Because he’s not a morning person like me he whines about getting up & I quickly tell him that he needs to get dressed & go eat breakfast while I feed Bella or he’s going to miss the bus. Then I go feed Bella who screams at me the whole time I change her diaper but thankfully after she nurses she goes back to sleep. I now have 10 minutes before the bus arrives so I rush downstairs only to find Caden wearing shorts because he has no clean pants. Thankfully he had finished eating so I ran upstairs dug through his dirty laundry, pulled out a pair of pants, & rush back downstairs throwing them at him & saying hurry put these on. I then finish packing his lunch & hurried him & Joshua out to the car. We get to the bus stop & the bus is late so we sit there and I suddenly realized I forgot to pack his folder… great. Bus comes we go back home & I collapse in James’s recliner exhausted from my whirlwind morning. Then it dawns on me that I also forgot to pack Caden’s snack for school, perfect guess I’ll be making a trip to the school now. I made the mistake of scrolling through Facebook to numb my tired brain as I sat in the chair & lost track of time. I looked up to find that we had to leave for school in 45 minutes & I wasn’t even dressed. So I tell Joshua to hurry & get dressed. I make his lunch & get his backpack ready. I race upstairs & throw on some leggings & a shirt. Shirt is too short so I grab the only other one I have that’s clean & long enough to keep me from making the leggings as pants fashion mistake. It’s a dressy maternity blouse that I figured I could pass off as a normal shirt & hopefully nobody would ask me if I was pregnant. I don’t have time to take a shower so I throw some makeup on & run the curling iron through my hair real quick. I looked in the mirror & thought “what a hot mess” so I grabbed some earrings thinking we’ll maybe if I have earrings on it will look like I actually thought this outfit through & put extra blush on to help my tired face look bright & happy (as if that would work). Joshua came in the room & cried about not wanting to take a nap at school and he was still in his pajamas! I very calmly (um not so much) instructed him to get dressed now… there may have been threats involved. He comes back dressed but I see he has toothpaste in his hair, he tells me Caden spit on him last night when they were brushing their teeth. Gross. I tell him to go wipe his hair with a rag, he comes back with his head soaking wet. I take him back to his bathroom to find the hand towel sopping wet along with combs & hair products scattered across the counter. I sigh then proceed to fix his hair & clean up. I tell him to go get shoes on while I wake Bella up & get her loaded in the carseat. When I pick her up she seems hot so I grab the thermometer & go to check her temperature only to find a poopy diaper. So I change her & take her temperature which thankfully was normal. I rush downstairs, get her in the carseat, & then remember that I was going to leave early so I could take Caden’s forgotten items to school; which by now I had forgotten about again! We were now 3 minutes past the time we needed to leave to get to school. I’m late every. single. morning. But this morning I wasn’t supposed to be late because it’s Joshua’s teacher’s birthday & I since being volunteered to be room mom I was in charge of bringing the vase for her flowers (all the kids were bringing flowers). I grab Bella, Caden’s stuff, the vase of flowers, & rush Joshua out to the car. By now I have about 5 minutes to get to school which is 10 minutes away. We arrive late of course & rush up to school with Bella in her stroller & holding a vase of flowers. A couple moms offer to help me & although I normally love help, I exclaim “No, I’m good” & rush past them. In my mind all I could think of was how they were probably thinking what I mess I was & how I need “help”. I drop Joshua off & rush back to the car calculating that I just have enough time to run to Caden’s school to drop off the items I forgot & still be able to make it to my dentist appointment on time. As I was driving to his school I got this text from one of those sweet moms that offered to help me at Joshua’s school “I don’t know how you do it. Dressed, hair done looking good, baby, kids, & teacher flowers. Way to go mama!”. Y’all I literally laughed at loud as I read it & thought man if only she knew what my morning was really like. It just reminded me of all the times I’ve looked at other women & thought wow she’s got it all together. In reality we’re all a little bit of a mess behind closed doors but we’re good at hiding our crazy & putting on a good front. So I wanted to share this today to encourage you that you don’t have to have it all together & we can be a hot mess together. So grab your leggings, put your hair in a messy bun, skip the makeup, & let’s all get real this morning. Have a funny hot mess story to share? I’d love to hear it!
